In about a week I went back, and asked if they thought “Born Again” was SocialISM. They said, “No, it is heathenISM.” In order to learn something about heathenISM I let a double-jointed heathen read my book. Then later I asked him if “Born Again” was heathenISM. He said, “No, it is communISM.” In those days (1904) I could find no professor of communISM and I came near suspecting that I was the first of that ISM, but after a diligent search I found a librarian who said he had read enough about ISMS to know what communISM ought to be. So I lent him the book to read and about a week later I said to him, “Well, comrade, is that communISM?” He said, “No, that is capitalISM.” It was easy to find a capitalist in those days and I let one of them read the book and subsequently asked him, “Is that capitalISM?” He said, “No, that is anti-financialISM.” Touts of financiallSM, however, think that it’s a hell-of-an-ISM. Now, my knowledge of financialISM was acquired by a quarter of a century of contacting the largest as well as the smallest financiers in America. Think of it — a quarter of a century spent with financiers of every known size, shape and character, during which time I obtained the necessary practical experience to understand the whole rotten system that milks everybody dry. Yes, those twenty-five years of actual business contact with all grades of financiers, not only showed them to me as they are and not as they pretend they are, but proved to me that financialISM is the dictator of all the ISMS. For many years I have tried to find an ISM that didn’t take its orders from financialISM, but I don’t believe there is such an animal on earth. Those big financiers chuckled when I told them that the people had some rights that should be respected. “The people? The people?” they repeated. “Do you mean those donkeys who gee and haw when we put the spurs to them?” The financiers don’t think much of that word people. They’d rather call you donkeys, as long as you let them ride you. It is your fault, people, not theirs, if you permit the financiers to make donkeys of you. Thus I have found that there isn’t an ISM in this country or any other country that doesn’t take orders from a tout of some financial group. All of your lives, people, you have been paying members of these different ISMS without knowing that the spider of them ail is FinancialISM. Each of you believe that the ISM that you pay fees and dues to must be all right because you are unaware that the touts of the financiers run it for the benefit of financialISM.
