supervises the building up and operating of the entire body that acts as
a two-legged house for you to live in and carry you around wherever you go.
This mental system which supervises the building and operating of this two-legged house of yours extends all over your body, from the ends of your toes to the tips of your hair, and is constructed in such a way that billions of mental organisms can communicate with each other and work under the general direction of the mind—which is controlled by you—providing you are sober and sensible. Now, within the interior of your skull is a brain that contains billions of mental organisms that operate under the general direction of the mind which contains functions of consciousness. One of these functions, is the memory and its work is to record impressions brought to the mind through your senses. So while you sit there your eyes photograph me and the pictures are sent to your memory so that later you can recall them and see me standing in front of you just as I am now. Yes, and your ears are taking impressions of my words and transmitting them to your memory so that you can recall later exactly what I am saying to you now. As children, your mental functions are pliable and in accordance with the impressions they receive are built up for better or for worse. They are made strong or weak by the kind of people with whom you associate. If you associate with sensible folks then you become sensible, but if you associate with silly people then you become silly. You grow up according to the impressions your mind receives through contact with external conditions. Now, children, the world has not made very much progress in the development of thinking machines during the last few thousand years because each generation absorbs the nonsense of the preceding one. For instance, you grow up like your parents. Your parents grew up like your grandparents. Your grandparents grew up like your great-grandparents. So you are like your great, great, great grandparents unless someone of your progenitors had the gumption to refuse to accept the foolishness taught from one to another. They teach you to dance today. Well, your greater forefathers taught your great forefathers to dance thousands of years ago. They teach you to smoke today. Well, your greater forefathers taught your great forefathers to smoke and use their nostrils for smoke stacks thousands of years ago. They teach you to drink alcoholic beverages today. Well, your greater forefathers taught your later forefathers to drink alcoholic beverages thousands of years ago. They teach you to cheat one another today. Well, your greater forefathers taught your later forefathers to cheat one another thousands of years ago. They teach you to lie to one another today. |
