During the year of 1908 I established the magazine “FLY” for
the purpose of (1) teaching the
people to build flying machines
(2) teaching them how to fly
them (3) pointing out to the people
that they should lay the foundation for a future Aircraft Industry (4) and prepare for a regular airline service that would
eventually extend all over the
Earth.
Previous to my publication of “FLY” my many friends everywhere invariably gave me credit for having some sense, but when they perused the contents of “FLY” they were then unanimous in their statements that I had gone crazy altogether. About that time I was introduced to the

at a social gathering in New York
City with the remark that “Mr.
Lawson is going to show Uncle
Sam how to defend America with
the aid of flying machines.”The Secretary, whose office was decorated with pictures of past warriors squatted upon the backs of horses, took one quick glance at me to make sure that I was perfectly harmless and then strutted away with a contemptuous blur overspreading his gorgeous physiognomy without uttering a solitary word. During the year of 1908, I sent a letter to the president of every college in the United States of America and the Dominion of Canada with the information that I was ready and willing to teach classes by mail the knowledge of aircraft construction and operation for which I would make no charges whatsoever.
